Session 2 BSBLIB401 Museums and Galleries

Welcome to Week Two of Cataloguing 2

Last week we started to look at how you would describe an item other than a book, today we're going to continue learning about how and why museums catalogue collections.

Australian Museum

Let’s start by having a look at the Australian Museum’s website

Museum Collections

"The Australian Museum's mission is to make nature, indigenous cultures and science accessible and relevant."

Class Activity 1

Spend some time having a look around this website and answer the following questions:

How big is the Australian Museum Collection?

The Australian Museum has two categories of Collections: Natural Sciences Collection and Cultural Collections. What are the collections within each category, the actual types of specimens, and the number of specimens in each?

I'm quite interested in the ornithology collection. What collection most interests you and why?

Fact Sheet: Cataloguing

“Cataloguing is an essential part of managing a museum’s key asset, the collection. Important museum activities such as research, interpretation, conservation, risk management, exhibition development and publications are dependent on detailed and up-to-date collection information.” https://mgnsw.org.au/sector/resources/online-resources/collection-management/cataloguing/

During today's session we will discuss the importance of handling materials correctly, organisational policies and collection policies and we will start by looking at the type of information we may need to record.

Let’s look at the following worksheet to see what might be needed to create a record.

Class Activity 2

Looking at the Cataloguing Fact Sheet, why does the museum need all of that information?

Based on your "Surprise item" from last week, or something else that is close by if you can't remember, what information can you fill in on the form?

Collection Policy

Let’s look at the following documents from Museums & Galleries of NSW:

"The Collection Policy guides the decision-making process for shaping the collections of the museum."

"Australia’s public collecting institutions enrich public life by displaying, interpreting, making
accessible and preserving the world’s shared cultural, scientific and historic heritage.
Acquisitions to collections and loans to institutions play a vital role in increasing our society’s
understanding of culture."

Class Activity 3

Why do museums and other cultural organisations need to have a collection policy? What purpose does it serve?

Searching online, see if you can find a collection policy document for another museum that we have not already looked at as well as an art gallery.

What sort of information is in each? How detailed are they? How does each help the decision-making process for the collection?

Next, we are going to look at the Museums Australia (Victoria) book called
