This subject is made up of 3 units and will be covered in this order:

BSBLIB401 Record and maintain collection information

BSBLIB405 Assist customers to access information

BSBLIB305 Use Established cataloguing tools

In today’s session we will begin with our first unit:

BSBLIB401 Record and maintain collection information

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to source collection information, and focuses on the maintenance and integrity of collection material records.

It applies to individuals who work autonomously within established guidelines, with responsibility for planning, monitoring and completing work activities.

Information recorded in a library's catalogue

What kind of information do you think would need to be recorded?

Where would we get this information from?

http://ellyssakroski.com/publications/

Let’s look at the record in Trove in relation to this book

Now let’s look at the record for the same book in Geelong Regional Libraries catalogue

Now our third and final look at the same book through a university library

Class Activity 1

What does a catalogue do?

Why do we have them?

What, if any, were the differences in the description of the book in these 3 catalogues?

Class Activity 2

So far we have looked at library catalogues and how they record information, however libraries are not the only organisations that catalogue or record information about resources.

What are some other organisations you can think of that would need to catalogue or record information?

Let’s now have a look at some other collections, each of these organisations catalogue their collections.

Other Catalogues

The Australian War Memorial

Museums Victoria

Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences

Australian Museum

Smithsonian

Class Activity 3

Choose two of the collections mentioned and compare the information they provide about the items in their collection, do they describe the item?

If there was no picture would you know what they were describing?

Class Activity 4

Let’s have some fun!

Delve into your bag or have a look around the room you are in and choose a 'mystery item‘.

Without showing anyone, I want you to describe your item to the class. You can't name it, you can provide size, colour, when it was acquired, and any other detail that will help your classmates identify it. See how long it takes and how many details need to be provided to get it correct!
